The idea for Janurow started back in 2012, when Sam Blythe and Shane Kingsland saw so many people getting involved in extraordinary stunts simply to raise money for charity.

The Janurow team

They had both been playing rugby for the Exeter Chiefs and were looking for a new challenge. This is how Janurow was born. “We wanted to be able to do something that would benefit the community by raising money for charities and helping people set a goal for their fitness in January” says Sam.

The story so far

Having seen so many people do extraordinary things to raise money for charity, Sam and Shane put their heads together and started the first Janurow event in 2014. It involved rowing an amazing 11,180,113 meters, the same distance as Exeter to the Philippines.

After that success, Sam and Shane began planning a new, challenging trial and Janurow2015 involved rowing the circumference of the UK. After a great response the total metres rowed exceeded expectations and now for Janurow2016 the rivers of Europe is the theme – from the Exe to the Volga choose your river and get rowing!

All you need is to access a rowing machine either at home or at a gym to get started. There are also rowing machines available 24 hours a day at Fitness Matters in Exeter.

This year we are looking forward to seeing everyone’s progress and seeing how far we have all rowed on a daily basis. So set up your Virgin Money page by clicking here, hop on a rowing machine and get going!
